The Neverending Story (German: Die Unendliche Geschichte) is a 1984 West Germanfantasy film based on the novel of the same name by Michael Ende. It follows a boy who reads a magical book that tells a story of a young warrior whose task is to stop a dark force called the Nothing from engulfing a mystical world. The film was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler and directed and co-written by Wolfgang Petersen (in his first English-language film), and stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney, Moses Gunn, and Alan Oppenheimer as the voices of both Falkor and Gmork (as well as other characters). At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. The film was the first in The NeverEnding Story film series.[2]

The film adapts the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second half of the book would subsequently be used as the primary rough basis for the second film, The Next Chapter. The third film, Escape from Fantasia, features an original plot.

Plot[edit]
Bastian Balthazar Bux is a shy and outcast bibliophile ten-year-old raised by his widowed father, teased by bullies from school. On his way to school, he hides from the bullies in a bookstore, interrupting the grumpy bookseller, Mr. Coreander. Bastian asks about one of the books he sees, called 'The Neverending Story', but Mr. Coreander advises against it. With his curiosity piqued, Bastian seizes the book, leaving a note promising to return it, and hides in the school's attic to read.
The book describes the fantasy world of Fantasia slowly being devoured by a malevolent force called 'The Nothing'. Fantasia's ruler, the Childlike Empress, has fallen ill, and Atreyu is tasked to discover the cure, believing that once the Empress is well, the Nothing will no longer be a threat. Atreyu is given a medallion named the Auryn that can guide and protect him in the quest. As Atreyu sets out, the Nothing summons Gmork, a vicious and highly intelligent wolf-like creature, to kill Atreyu.Atreyu's quest directs him to the adviser Morla the Ancient One in the Swamps of Sadness. Though the Auryn protects Atreyu, his beloved horse Artax is lost to the swamp, and he continues alone. Later, Atreyu is surprised by the sudden appearance of Morla, a giant turtle. Bastian, reading, is also surprised and lets out a scream, which Atreyu and Morla appear to hear. Morla does not have the answers Atreyu seeks, but directs him to the Southern Oracle, ten thousand miles distant. Atreyu succumbs to exhaustion trying to escape the Swamps but is saved by the luckdragon Falkor. Falkor takes him to the home of two gnomes that live near the entrance to the Southern Oracle. The gnomes explain that Atreyu will face various trials before reaching the Oracle. Atreyu gets past the first trial, but is perplexed by the second trial, a mirror that shows the viewer's true self, reveals a boy which Bastian recognizes as himself. Bastian throws the book aside, but after catching his breath, continues to read. Atreyu eventually meets the Southern Oracle who tells him the only way to save the Empress is to find a human child to give her a new name, beyond the boundaries of Fantasia.
Atreyu and Falkor flee before the Nothing consumes the Southern Oracle. In flight, Atreyu is knocked from Falkor's back into the Sea of Possibilities, losing the Auryn in the process. He wakes on the shore of the abandoned ruins, where he meets Rock Biter, who laments the loss of his friends. Atreyu finds a series of paintings depicting his quest. Gmork reveals himself, having been lying in wait and explains that Fantasia represents humanity's imagination, and that the Nothing represents adult apathy and cynicism against it. Atreyu fends off and kills Gmork as the Nothing begins to consume the ruins. Falkor, who had managed to locate the Auryn, rescues Atreyu in time. The two find themselves in a void with only small fragments of Fantasia remaining, and fear they have failed when they spot the Empress's Ivory Tower among the fragments. Inside, Atreyu apologizes for failing the Empress, but she assures him he has succeeded in bringing to her a human child who has been following his quest: Bastian. She further explains that, just as Bastian is following Atreyu's story, 'others' are following Bastian's, making this part of the neverending story. Real racing 2 hd apk download. As the Nothing begins to consume the Tower, the Empress pleads directly to Bastian to call out her new name, but in amazement that he himself has been incorporated into the story as the child they were looking for, he denies the events as just being a story and Atreyu dies. Bastian runs to the window and calls out the name he had selected into the storm (Moonchild), and loses consciousness.
When he wakes, he finds himself in blackness with the Empress, with only a grain of sand, the last bit of Fantasia remaining. The Empress tells Bastian that he has the power to bring Fantasia back with his imagination. Bastian re-creates Fantasia, and as he flies on Falkor's back, he sees the land and its inhabitants restored, and that Atreyu has been reunited with Artax. When Falkor asks what his next wish will be, Bastian then brings Falkor back to the real world to chase down the bullies from before. The film ends with the narration that Bastian had many more wishes and adventures, and adds: 'but that's another story'.

The adaptation only covered the first half of the book. The majority of the film was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich, except for the street scenes and the school interior in the real world, which were shot in Vancouver, Canada (the Gastown Vancouver Steam Clock can be seen in the bully chase scene at the end of the film as the three bullies are chased down Cambie Street past the steam clock at the intersection of Water Street and then on down Blood Alley[3]),[4] and the beach where Atreyu falls, which was filmed at Monsul Beach in Almería (Spain).
Music[edit]
The film score of The NeverEnding Story was composed by Klaus Doldinger of the German jazz group Passport. The theme song of the North American release of the film was composed by Giorgio Moroder with lyrics by Keith Forsey, and performed by Christopher 'Limahl' Hamill, once the lead singer of Kajagoogoo, and Beth Anderson. Released as a single in 1984, it peaked at No. 4 on the UK singles chart, No. 6 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been covered by The Birthday Massacre, Creamy, Dragonland, Kenji Haga, and New Found Glory. More recent covers were done by Norwegiansynthpop group Echo Image on their 2001maxi-singleSkulk and by Germantechno group Scooter on their 2007 album Jumping All Over the World. This Limahl song, along with other 'techno-pop' treatments to the soundtrack, is not present in the German version of the film, which features Doldinger's orchestral score exclusively.
In 1994, Italianhouse music group Club House released the song 'Nowhere Land,' featuring Carl, which combines the melody of the tune 'Bastian's Happy Flight' with original lyrics.
An official soundtrack album was released featuring Doldinger's score and Moroder's theme tune (Moroder also rescored several scenes for the version released outside Germany).[5] The track listing (Doldinger is responsible for everything from track 6 onwards) is as follows:

Critical response[edit]
The film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% based on reviews from 40 critics. The site's critical consensus reads: 'A magical journey about the power of a young boy's imagination to save a dying fantasy land, The NeverEnding Story remains a much-loved kids' adventure.'[13]Metacritic gives the film a score of 46/100 based on reviews from 10 critics.[14]
Film critic Roger Ebert gave it three out of four stars and praised its visual effects, saying that 'an entirely new world has been created' because of them,[15] a comment echoed by Variety.[2] Joshua Tyler of CinemaBlend referred to it as 'One of a scant few true Fantasy masterpieces'.[13]
Vincent Canby panned the film as a 'graceless, humorless fantasy for children' in a 1984 New York Times review. Canby's criticism charged that parts of the film 'sounded like 'The Pre-Teenager's Guide to Existentialism'. He further criticized the 'tacky' special effects, and that the construction of the dragon looked like 'an impractical bathmat'.[16]
Ende felt that this adaptation's content deviated so far from the spirit of his book that he requested that production either be halted or the film's title be changed; when the producers did neither, he sued them and subsequently lost the case.[17] Ende called the film a 'gigantic melodrama of kitsch, commerce, plush and plastic' [Ein 'gigantisches Melodram aus Kitsch, Kommerz, Plüsch und Plastik'].[18]
Box office[edit]
The film performed very well at the box office, grossing US$100 million worldwide against a production budget of DM 60 million (approximately US$27 million at the time). Almost five million people went to see it in Germany, a number rarely achieved by German productions, resulting in a gross of about US$20 million domestically. It also grossed a similar amount in the United States; only a modest sum in the American market, which director Wolfgang Petersen ascribed to the film's European sensibilities.[19]

Home media[edit]
LaserDisc[edit]
The film was released by Warner Bros. on LaserDisc with a digital stereo soundtrack in 1985.
A widescreen laserdisc was released on 28 August 1991; no special features were included.
DVD[edit]
The Region 1DVD was first released in 2001 by Warner Bros, containing only the North American release of the film. The only audio option is a 2.0 stereo mix in either English or Spanish. The theatrical trailer is the lone extra feature presented.
There is also a quite lavish 2003 European version, which is a two-disc special edition with packaging shaped like the book from the film, and containing both the North American and German releases of the film. Various extras, such as a 45-minute documentary, music video, and galleries, are presented on the second disc.[20] However, there is no English audio for the German version of the film. This edition has gone out of print. The standard single-disc edition is also available for the Region 2 market.
A Dutch import has also appeared on the Internet in various places, which not only contains the North American release of the film, but also includes a remastered DTSsurround track, which is not found in either the German or the Region 1 releases.
In 2008, Czech- and Slovak-language DVD versions appeared in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Blu-ray[edit]
The first Blu-ray release was a region-free Dutch edition on 24 March 2007.
On 2 March 2010, Warner released a Region A Blu-ray edition of the film. The disc includes a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track, which marks the first time a 5.1 surround track has been included in a US home video version of the film. No special features or theatrical trailer are included.[21]
Recent German releases feature the original Klaus Doldinger soundtrack with the original English audio track.
On 7 October 2014, a 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray was released, which duplicates the DTS surround track of its predecessor. Originally described as a 'newly' remastered version of the film, Warner released a statement indicating that 'the only remastered version is The NeverEnding Story II', while not elaborating further on this current US release.[22] The 30th Anniversary Edition contains the original theatrical trailer, a commentary track by director Wolfgang Petersen, documentaries and interviews from both 1984 and 2014, and a German-language/English-subtitled feature detailing the digital restoration process of the film.
Legacy[edit]
The film has since been an inspiration in popular culture.
Music[edit]
- The American metal band Atreyu derived their name from the character of Atreyu.
- The Mexican pop punk band Fälkor derived their name from the character of Falkor, changing the styling of the middle a for ä.
- The American rock band Bayside have used quotes from the film as titles of their songs. Examples include 'They look like strong hands' and 'They're not horses, they're unicorns'.
- The American rock band Rooney made reference to the film in the song 'I'm Shakin' ('I tossed and turned all night 'cause I was looking for an ending / This was so because I watched all day The NeverEnding Story with Atreyu')
- The American pop punk band, New Found Glory, covered the film's theme song on their album, From the Screen to Your Stereo.
- The Spanish indie-rock band Vetusta Morla derived their name from the character of Morla the Ancient One ('vetusta' means 'ancient' in Spanish).
- The American rock band The Aquabats describe Falkor's potential romantic life in their song 'Luck Dragon Lady!' on the album Hi-Five Soup!.
- The American grindcore band The Nothing that Kills is completely inspired by the film. The band uses quotes from the film as lyrics and also incorporates samples on their album The Neverending Story.
Warner Bros. planned adaptation of the novel[edit]
In 2009, it was reported that Warner Bros., The Kennedy/Marshall Company and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way were in the early stages of creating another adaptation of Ende's novel. They intend to 'examine the more nuanced details of the book' rather than remake the original film by Petersen.[23]
In 2011, producer Kathleen Kennedy said that problems securing the rights to the story may mean a second adaptation is 'not meant to be.'[24]

Login access is disabledI admit that I am still waiting for a luck dragon to come and take me home to Fantasia. I belong there. A part of me lives there and so does a part of everyone, although they may not be aware of it. This is without a doubt the most beautiful movie ever made (although Legend comes close) and its message will never die as long as people hold on to their dreams. Barret Oliver's performance as Bastian still makes me cry. He speaks to that part of all of us that is not afraid to 'do what we dream.' Noah Hathaway was perfect for the part of Atreyu. He is one of the most beautiful and realistic heroes ever depicted. And Tami Stronach as the Childlike Empress (Moon Child) remains one of the most beautiful characters ever to grace the screen. The acting is wonderful, and the background scenery is breathtaking.
But the Neverending Story is more than just a movie. It speaks to that part in all of us that will never let go of our dreams. It is a story that will never end as long as there are people to appreciate its message. Everyone should see this movie and remember: Fantasia IS real. And 'Fantasia can arise in you.'

This movie the most beautiful and touching movies ever created. It's an example of a timeless story, told with wonderful creatures and dazzling vistas of the land of Fantasia. The amazing and perfect soundtrack help capture your heart and won't let go until the end credits fill the screen. At which time you notice that you've been crying for the last ½ hour. I consider myself extremely lucky that this wonderful movie was shown to me at such a young age, telling me that the world is what you make of it.
And luckily, this September I can watch it all on DVD!!
This is a masterpiece, nothing less

The rich production is notorious in so many ways: the gorgeous settings and landscapes/sceneries; the amazing special effects, visual effects and blue-screen effects; the magic; the spectacular combination of sounds, which impress even more if heard loud; the music..
Another major strength is the wonderful soundtrack, work of Giorgio Moroder and Klaus Doldinger, with that genial synthpop orientation. It's so 80's and I very much welcome that. The songs are all beautiful. Another great song is Limahl's 'Never Ending Story', as well as the two lovely Tami Stronach's singles 'Fairy Queen' and 'Riding on a Rainbow'. It's impressing how she sings so well.
The movie is thrilling, very involving, exciting, great fun, contains lots of adventure, danger, strong suspense, darkness, drama, strong emotions, fantastic and strange creatures, interesting and well developed characters and a great cast.
There are strange and fantastic creatures such as the Racing Snail, the creepy Gmork, Morla the ancient one, the friendly Rockbiter (a gentle giant), the Sleepy Bat and Falkor the luckdragon. I like Falkor very much: he's so big, so cool, so fluffy, so cute and so friendly. He also has a great sense of humor and his dog-like appearance makes him irresistible.
Other interesting characters are the somewhat rude Nighthob, Teeny Weeny, the hilariously typically grumpy old man Mr. Koreander, the eccentric and amusing gnomes Engywook and Urgl, Cairon and especially Atreyu (and his horse Artax), Bastian and the Childlike Empress. Atreyu, Bastian and the Childlike Empress are all terrific kids. Atreyu is a different kind of hero: a true hero child, which is unusual and amazing. Bastian himself is another hero child.
The movie is promising since the very beginning, with those stunning, dazzling and colorful clouds, which bring it a magical touch. The beauty of the Ivory Tower palace, the golden of the Sphinxes and the blue of the Southern Oracle are also magical details about this movie, among many others. On the other hand, the storm called 'The Nothing' is spectacular but slightly creepy. Nevertheless, it is another precious help to give magic and beauty to the film. Not to mention details like the sky full of stars and no clouds and when the sky has clouds..
It's amazing how one gets involved into the story. While watching the movie, one can feel deeply involved in the story as much as Bastian does. It's impossible to ignore it because it captures one's attention and heart. Also, one can't help but get deeply involved in Atreyu's quest and everything he confronts to save Fantasia, including his emotions and despair.
The actors are all wonderful. Barret Oliver is amazing as the shy and imaginative Bastian, Noah Hathaway is awesome in the role of the young warrior Atreyu and Tami Stronach is terrific as the Childlike Empress. Her role is minor but very relevant and significant. She really looked like a little princess by portraying the Childlike Empress. It's kinda surprising that this was her only movie role ever. Noah Hathaway.. that long hair really fitted very well on him and his character Atreyu resembles an Indian, but only a little bit.
'The NeverEnding Story' is more than one of the greatest movies from the 80's. It is one of the best, most beautiful, magical and distinguish movies ever. A fine movie with a very good message as well. I can positively say that Mr. Wolfgang Petersen knew what he was doing. This is his masterpiece.
The movie is a German production filmed in English with mostly American and English actors. The majority of the film takes place in Germany. And it was officially launched under its original title, 'Die Unendliche Geschichte', despite being filmed in English. By the way, I was born in 1984 and I'm very proud that this movie is from that year. After all, it's a movie that I love.
This should definitely be on Top 250.

Now, does the film have the important elements of a fantasy yarn? Yep it sure does. It looks great it has strange creatures and wonderful landscapes and it's fair share of adventure. The book bastien read centres around Artreyu a young warrior who is the only hope of saving Fantasia from the evil that is 'the Nothing' which is what it's name suggest and will turn Fantasia into nothing.
I had never watched this until recently when purely by chance it was on TV and had a good write up (ah the power of movie critics!) so I thought that as a lover of fantasy, I would watch it. Glad I did people, glad I did. It takes you back to feelings of childhood and captures the imagination. Wolfgang Peterson, who didn't particularly impress me in recent flop Troy, directs preceedings with class and control. There are some good young actors too. ****

No fantasy film I've seen has tapped more successfully into the kinds of philosophical thoughts that kids have. Think of Rockbiter's speech describing the Nothing: 'A hole would be something. Nah, this was nothing. And it got bigger, and bigger, and bigger..' This is the type of film that greatly appeals to introspective kids who think about things like infinity and the end of the universe. Do children really think about such things? I did. People who find that surprising have forgotten how profound children can sometimes be.
The whole of Fantasia, indeed, seems to be built out of children's dreams and fears. Some of it is about exhilaration, as when Atreyu rides Falkor. Others reflect anxiety, as in Atreyu's trek through the Swamps of Sadness. What appealed to me most as a kid was how an imaginative but passive child, sort of a young Walter Mitty, opens up a book in which an older, braver version of himself goes on adventures. But 'Neverending Story' isn't so much escapism as it is about escapism. It's essentially a fable about the destruction of a child's fantasy world as he grows older and adapts to the modern world.
The special effects are good for their day. Although they look phony at a few points, the film's distinct visual look, from the shimmering Ivory Tower to the assortment of weird creatures, holds up well today. What makes the film work especially well is that the two child stars--Barret Oliver and Noah Hathaway--prove themselves capable actors. I use the word 'capable' because almost everyone in the film overacts in an annoying way, which I blame primarily on the director. But there's a wonderful cameo by Gerald McRaney as Bastian's father. He has the perfect tone for the scene, appearing loving but distant, unable to fathom Bastian's mind. I wish the film had followed through by returning to their relationship at the end and exploring how Bastian changes as a result of his experiences in Fantasia.
The reason the ending doesn't work is obvious to anyone who's read the book. Simply put, the movie shows only the first half of the book! While this isn't the movie's fault entirely--there was no way the entire story could have fit into one movie--this could have been handled better. 'The Wizard of Oz' faced the same problem yet managed not only to become one of the greatest fantasy movies of all time but to surpass its source material in some ways. 'The Neverending Story' doesn't accomplish that feat. The story feels unresolved at the end while at the same time failing to clearly set up for a sequel. It attempts to wrap everything up with a sequence in which Bastian takes revenge on his old bullies. I enjoyed this scene when I was a kid, but in retrospect it creates a clash between the real world and the fantasy world. Bastian never grows as a character, he never learns to put his feet on the ground, something the early scenes suggest will happen.
There's one other problem, and that's that Wolfgang Petersen never really figured out the proper tone for a children's movie. He must not have had a clear idea what age he was shooting for. Some of the scenes are quite scary and violent, making this film inappropriate for younger children. Yet the muppet-like characters are presented in an annoyingly condescending way that I doubt older kids (not to mention teens and adults) would appreciate. For example, the first scene in Fantasia plays like a revival of Sesame Street, with Rockbiter filling the Cookie Monster role. By the time I was old enough to appreciate the deeper aspects of the story, I cringed at the film's cutesy moments. Petersen didn't have to direct the film this way. Had he shot for a wider age group, the result would have been fresher and more authentic for everyone.

Bastian, a young boy lives in a dream world, his father wants him to grow up his school would like him to get his head out of the clouds and is tormented by bullies. On his way into school while trying get away from the bullies he runs into an old book shop. While hiding inside the owner shows him The Neverending Story' a huge volume decorated with the Orin the symbol of the child like emprise of the Land Fantasia. When the owner isn't look Bastian takes the book.
This is a beautiful film; it enthralled me as a child and still does as an adult. I have watched over and over again, never tiring of it and always enjoying it. If you have young children or are an old child it doesn't matter this is pure a adventure fantasy for all ages, with colourful characters.

This film has a special place in my heart, cause I grew up with this film. I've probably seen this film more times than any other movie (although, it may be too close to call with 'Labyrinth', 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'The Dark Crystal' in the running)! Isn't it funny how when you were young you could watch the same movie over and over and over and over and never get sick of it..not that a whole lot has changed since then, but it cracks me up how well I remember this film ever time I see it. I remember just about ever line, every scene, every nuance, every single little miniscule detail about this movie! Ok..I'm sounding a bit obsessed aren't I.
Well, what I'm trying to say here is that this is a great film and with an excellent story. The acting, directing, special effects, and everything else is just excellent in this film! Wolfgang Petersen really out-did himself with this film! I would definitely recommend this film to anyone that likes fantasy films..what am I saying, I would (and do) recommend this film to EVERYONE! What are you reading this review for? Go see this movie!!! Thanks for reading,

As young Bastian takes the book and begins reading it, the movie goes from what I thought to be a stuffy fantasy film, to actually be a magical, clever and emotional adventure. In an age where CGI rules nearly every movie, and pop culture references are to be scattered within every scene in order to create a bit of a norm with the audience, this film does the exact opposite, by creating no silly dialog based off of some other film, or referencing some famous TV show or popular song, this is what fantasy should be today, but sadly, is falling apart with every new 'Shrek' and 'Hoodwinked' out on the market.
The scenes that give off the most powerful emotional responses to me are the ones when the world tends to look chaotic, destroyed and nearly moments away from their destruction. The creatures in the film, such as the Rock Biter and Falkor are the greatest examples of why making creatures for movies with good old fashioned foam rubber and some animatronics instead of CGI really go a long way. The magic Atreyu experiences with his interaction with these two creatures is a lot better than watching the child actor trying to imagine the creature in front of him. Working with CG, people's eyes wander because they cannot see the creature, with the characters in this movie acting with puppets, there's more response and emotion than trying to act with something that's not there.
The last few minutes are the most emotional to me. The Princess is simply a cute little girl who knows what the problem is, but it's a bit different than just saying it.
Yes, the acting on Bastian's part is a bit bad, and the ending is a bit weak, and the editing is pretty poor, compared to other movies, but you know what? I loved this movie. I didn't know what was going to happen next. I had tears in my eyes during the swamp of despair, I got emotional when the princess yelled for Bastion and I had little tears for the ending theme.
People probably look at this movie as outdated, I think it's fresher than anything out to date. From the beginning song by Limahl (Check for Kajagoogoo from the 80's) to the ending with Bastion yelling 'Yeah!', it's an absolute treat.
Give Shrek a break, grab this movie instead.

The Basics.. It was released in 1984 - when I was born.. shows my age. and it continues to be played every Christmas and often on a wet weekend. Its a magical adventure with a cast of all sorts, Humans, fairies, Bug people, rock monsters and a flying dragon, and so many more. the plot is to long winded to explain here, basically its a magical quest with great set/location and a tedious link to the real world. it addresses some heavy issues: Bullying, Death, Love and fear. so far I have chosen not to show my kids. I don't want them to feel the sadness of the swamp (RIP Artax). but I know my kids will love this film when they get chance to watch it.
The Bad-ish!.. some people say it is a little slow, some say the acting or the lip sink is poor. but none of that matters. The film is just the right speed to really feel all the aspects. The acting is well played, can seem a little OTT at times, but that's part of the fun. and the lip sink issues actually seem to suit the characters somehow.. and to be honest, you wont actually notice unless you stare and study the film, deliberately looking. I would sadly have to say that the franchise didn't quite build well.. Though this film was great, the following continuations were really not as good, NES2 was OK. NES3 was worse than bilge-water.
The Good.. as a child I grew up watching these easy to love friends in the film. it teaches a good set of moral things about good friends. The music - especially the main theme is great.. My MP3 player now has 'Never ending story - Ah-h-h-ah-h-h.. Make believe I'm everywhere, Im written in the lines, there upon the pages..' The film will just blow you away - I would actually say - for its time, it is an easy 80s equivalent of the Lord of the rings.
If you have not seen it I demand you go watch it now ! - But first, go get some movie snacks, and a family pack of tissues per person for the swamp scene.. seriously, you will be in floods of tears. My final point is that this film will do everything the old Disney (not a D film) told you their films would do.. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you will enjoy every minuet.

Bastian does not resist and shoplifts the book, leaving a note telling that he will return the book after he reads it. He goes to the school attic and anxiously reads the book that tells the story of the magic kingdom of Fantasia that is doomed to destruction, unless the boy Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) can save it. But he needs the help of an Earthling boy to avoid that The Nothing destroys his world.
The first times that I saw 'Die Unendliche Geschichte', a.k.a. 'The Neverending Story', I was younger and younger and I simply loved it. Twenty-eight years later, I have just bought the Blu-Ray and after watching it again, I liked but less that I remember.
The state of art especial effects in 1984 is now dated and the acting is only reasonable. But the story of the coming of age by force of a boy that sees his innocence lost due to the death of his mother and bullying at school has a beautiful message in the end and is still worthwhile watching it. My vote is seven.
Title (Brazil): 'A História Sem Fim' ('The Neverending Story')

The effects, especially on the DVD, look amazing, better than most of the CGI crap we're force-fed nowadays.
If you love the movie, go buy the book. It's a million times better, if you can believe it, and certainly better than the crap sequels and cartoons and stuff that have come since.

Director/co-writer Wolfgang Petersen brings a sense of awe, wonder, and tremendous sweeping creativity to the captivating plot along with a more dark and daring sensibility that prevents the premise from becoming too silly or sappy. The world of Fantasia is beautifully well realized: The special effects hold up extremely well, with the assorted animatronic creatures registering as remarkably lifelike and convincing. Said colorful creatures include friendly luck dragon Falkor, gentle giant Rock Biter, scary wolf G'mork, and apathetic turtle Morla.
Gerald McRaney contributes a solid turn as Bastian's preoccupied father while Sydney Bromley and Patricia Hayes provide amusing comic relief as a couple of bickering gnomes. Jost Vacano's sumptuous widescreen cinematography provides a wealth of striking visuals. The ethereal synth score by Klaus Doldinger and Giorgio Moroder does the tuneful trick. Best of all, this film even makes a sweet and touching point about the importance of never losing one's capacity for hope and ability to make dreams come true with the sheer power of pure imagination. A total treat.
